THE JOURNEY TO NET ZERO:  ALTERNATIVE FUELS FOR THE NAVAL & MARITIME INDUSTRY

90% of what we wear, eat and consume is moved by sea. As consumption and trade continue to grow, more ships will cross oceans.

The naval and maritime industry is energy-intensive and responsible for close to 3% of the world’s carbon emissions. Amid the threat of climate change, the industry is taking steps to reduce its carbon footprint. One of the most promising solutions is using more sustainable marine fuels for shipping.

Through this session, students can understand the impact of traditional marine fuels such as diesel on the environment, and why there is an urgent need to transition to more sustainable alternatives. The session will also discuss the various types of alternative fuels, and the benefits and challenges of each. Finally, it will look at how we can transform these ideas into reality, in relation to the use of alternative fuels for naval ships. This includes considerations such as cost, infrastructure limitations and technical constraints.

There will be a Q&A segment where students can learn more about how they can play a role in building a more sustainable future for the naval and maritime industry and the skills required.
