USCG orders nine OTH-IVs

SAFE Boats International has received an order worth approximately $3.89 million from the US Coast Guard (USCG) for nine Over-the-Horizon (OTH)-IV cutter boats, the USCG announced on 1 June.

Deliveries of the boats are expected to begin in October 2016.

UDT 2016: Military research created commercial SonarBell

A UK-based company that has commercialised military sonar location research from the Ministry of Defence (MoD) say that their Sonarbell product could have more applications than initially envisaged.

The SonarBell, manufactured by Subsea Asset Location Technologies (SALT), is a passive sonar reflector that can be currently used as a marking solution where more expensive technologies such as active transponders limit the customer base.

USCG to introduce new cyber guidelines

The US Coast Guard (USCG) is currently in the process of developing cyber strategy standards for port vulnerability assessments, which will begin to be implemented in summer 2016.

Cyber secuity is a hot topic for most industries, not least the maritime domain where at present there is little to no regulation on how to prevent attacks.

US CBP receives first interceptor vessel

SAFE Boats International (SBI) has completed and delivered a new Coastal Interceptor Vessel (CIV) for US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Air and Marine Operations (AMO), the company announced on 27 May.

The CIV has been formally named 'Alexandria'.

Australian P-8A makes maiden flight

The first Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) P-8A Poseidon aircraft has successfully completed its maiden flight, the Australian Department of Defence announced on 25 May.

The aircraft flew from Renton Airfield, Washington, to Boeing Field where will be fitted with mission systems as part of Australia's project AIR 7000.

Singapore receives first LMV

The Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) took delivery of its first Littoral Mission Vessel (LMV), Independence, from shipbuilder ST Marine on 26 May.

Independence, launched on 3 July 2015, completed harbour trials and platform acceptance tests prior to delivery to Tuas Naval Base, where it will belong to 182 Squadron of the Maritime Security Task Force.

Saab North America launches Sea Wasp

After prior display at various exhibitions, Saab North America used the Sea-Air-Space 2016 event to ‘officially’ launch its Sea Wasp underwater anti-IED robot.

Sea Wasp addresses multiple challenges associated with underwater explosive devices planted in harbor environments, according to Jon Kaufmann, VP for naval programme business development at Saab North America.

Austal seals Pacific contract

Austal has signed an AU$280 million (US$210 million) contract with Australia’s Department of Defence (DoD) to build and maintain 19 patrol boats for South Pacific neighbours under the Pacific Patrol Boat programme.

The steel-hulled vessels will be constructed at Austal’s facility in Henderson, Western Australia, with Austal proposing to carry out sustainment – including deep maintenance – at its facilities in Cairns, Queensland.

HMS Tyne completes OST

HMS Tyne, a River-class offshore patrol vessel of the British Royal Navy, has successfully completed Operational Sea Training (OST) and is ready for continued operations in UK waters, the navy announced on 3 May.

The OST took place with the ship under the direction of Flag Officer Sea Training North (FOST(N)), in the waters of the Firth of Clyde - outside the vessel's normal operating areas in the 200nm Exclusive Economic Zone around England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

South Africa eye Wave Glider

The South African Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) could seek a solution to illegal, unregulated and unreported (IUU) fishing through the Wave Glider USV.

Officials from Liquid Robotics, who manufacture the Wave Glider series of USVs, told Shephard at Xponential that the platform would be able to provide an enduring maritime domain awareness system and monitor vessel movements.
